Non-functional requirements (NFA) play a central role in software development. In contrast to functional requirements, which describe the basic purpose an application should fulfill, non-functional requirements answer the “how” of implementation. These can be parameters such as response time, usability, availability or security.
Clearly defined non-functional requirements are therefore a prerequisite for successful software development. Even if all functional requirements are formally implemented correctly, the product may turn out to be useless.
