Ismaning, Oct 30, 2024

The objective is to evaluate novel strategies designed to mitigate the impacts of climate change

msg and the municipality of Ismaning have jointly initiated a real-world laboratory focused on smart city innovations aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change. The initial phase of this project involves the creation of a comprehensive heat map designed to alert especially at-risk populations, including the elderly, individuals with pre-existing health conditions, infants, and young children, about the health hazards associated with extreme temperature fluctuations.

Sensors capture temperature information for focused prevention efforts

Sensors have been strategically placed at various locations within the municipality to continuously monitor temperature and humidity levels. The data gathered is extrapolated across the municipal area and represented in a heat map, illustrating the temperature variations in Ismaning. The objective is to formulate actionable recommendations for those most impacted and to enhance citizens' preparedness for upcoming heatwaves, enabling them to access information and respond effectively.

Development of further digital solutions for the municipality

The smart city real-world laboratory provides a platform for the collaborative development of further innovative solutions alongside the municipality. Beyond the heat map, the data will facilitate optimized and resource-efficient irrigation for trees. “We are implementing new strategies in a practical manner to enhance the quality of life in Ismaning,” states Mayor Dr. Alexander Greulich. The project's objective extends beyond immediate heat prevention measures; it also seeks to establish long-term solutions for sustainable urban development.

Continuous expansion of the real-world laboratory

In the forthcoming two years, the sensor system will undergo further expansion to facilitate the flexible implementation of new applications. The objective is to leverage digital technologies for the collection of ecologically significant data, thereby enhancing climate protection efforts. The real-world laboratory will be progressively expanded, allowing it to adapt responsively to the evolving needs of the community.

Focus on climate protection

The challenges posed by climate change and the rise in extreme weather events are significant for urban areas and municipalities. In response, Ismaning is implementing innovative digital solutions leveraging msg's expertise. “Through the real-world laboratory, our aim is not only to enhance heat mitigation strategies but also to collect vital data for sustainable and intelligent urban development,” states Hans Zehetmaier, Chairman of the msg Supervisory Board.
