Public Sector Souveräne Cloud

Sovereign cloud

Sovereign cloud for public administration

The sovereign, national cloud is coming - and is finally opening up the same opportunities for public authorities and other public players that companies are already utilising today with hyperscaler offerings: high scalability, elasticity and flexibility with lower costs and reduced personnel requirements. In addition, administrations benefit from location independence, better performance and high availability.

msg supports authorities at all administrative levels in utilising the advantages of the sovereign cloud in a targeted manner. This guarantees the highest standards of data protection, data security and interoperability - in accordance with the specifications of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). With our expertise, we help you to successfully integrate secure, powerful and future-proof cloud solutions based on open source into your IT landscape.

Structured migration for sustainable IT transformation

However, the benefits of using the cloud are only realised when it is brought to life: When services are moved to the cloud and obtained from there. The complexity of migrating existing IT landscapes to centralised cloud environments is high for public administration: if IT services are to be transformed into the cloud as part of consolidation projects, this is not a one-off procedure, but usually affects several services in one environment. There is a risk that experience will not be passed on and therefore identical, redundant activities will be carried out repeatedly.

Specialised applications also require individual, highly specific adaptations in order to run in the cloud. An industry-specific migration procedure is required, as well as the expertise for implementation and continuous adaptation. Migrating to the cloud will significantly change IT processes and the associated roles. A customised adaptation for the cloud environment is required.

Moving to the cloud means a modernisation push that entails both technical and organisational changes. The following services take centre stage:

We navigate with you through the options for IaaS, PaaS and SaaS, support you in selecting the right offer and ensure independence and balance between the various cloud providers.

The cloud transformation and utilisation process developed by msg is specially tailored to the requirements of the public sector. It supports the efficient transformation and operation of services. Together with you, we utilise our experience to make work steps more transparent and easier to plan. This makes the transformation of entire application landscapes in particular more routine, more secure and faster.

The effort required to implement a migration concept can vary greatly. Depending on the type of service and the intended cloud deployment model, different approaches such as ‘lift and shift’ or even a more comprehensive redesign of the service may be required. During the migration, we jointly customise the interfaces, implement security requirements and transfer the existing software infrastructure to the cloud.

After the successful migration, operation of the cloud service begins. To ensure smooth cloud operation, we take over the maintenance of automation services, the management of certificates and the operation of automation interfaces. Version management, release management and test automation are further services that ensure success.

News from the Public Sector

Review

From 18 to 19 March 2025, more than 3,000 experts from administration, business and science came together in Berlin to discuss innovative solutions for the digitalization of administration under the motto “Digital administration goes on air”.

Interview

Digital twins create virtual representations of real systems - such as cities or industrial plants - in order to evaluate data in real time and carry out simulations. In the public sector, it is used to optimize urban processes, such as traffic planning or environmental monitoring, and thus improve the quality of life.

Consider the scenario of a panel discussion or a question-and-answer session featuring a group of experts in the relevant field. While these participants possess significant knowledge, they may also exhibit a degree of bias due to their established perspectives. Introducing an artificial intelligence (AI) as one of the participants could provide a refreshing dynamic.

Interview

Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) serves as key for optimizing of IT infrastructures through transparency, strategic planning and efficient communication. The central tasks of EAM are the collection, documentation and planning of the IT landscape to ensure an efficient and sustainable IT architecture.
